Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Why does the “knowledge of good and evil” kill us?
Prior to gaining this knowledge, Adam had only one decision that he was capable of making, either eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or stay away from that tree. For everything else, all he could do when he faced a decision was to go to God and ask which way to go and what to do... in other words, he didn’t have adequate knowledge to make decisions so he had to rely solely on God’s direction in everything.
But once Adam had the knowledge of good and evil and could make decisions himself without the direction of God (who will only point us to good), he started to make bad decisions… those decisions led him away from God and to death.
Our goal now is to try and get back to a pre-fall state and seek God in everything, trust His leading, lean not on our own understanding of good and evil, and acknowledge Him in everything… or… our goal now is to seek to give up our knowledge of good and evil. The closer we come to realizing that goal, the more content we become. Why? Because God will only lead us to good.
